Picnic at Hanging Rock

Martindale Hall is one of South Australia's best known historic houses and notable pastoral homesteads. Built on gently rising ground it commands a wide view across the countryside. The entrance hall, with black and white marble floor, leads into the main hall which gives access via a carved staircase to the first floor.
******* This beautiful building has provided the perfect background for Peter Weir's 1975 film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', which was based on Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel. Another large part of the movie was filmed at the Wairoa gardens at Aldgate. *******
Although the outdoor scenes were taken at Hanging Rock, some 60 km from Melbourne and about 15 km from Woodend, Vic, others were taken at Strathalbyn and Stirling. The indoor filming was done mostly at Martindale Hall in South Australia.
Picnics and horse races have been held since the 1860s. The first Hanging Rock Cup was on New Years Day 1880
